Singapore’s emblem (though not quite officially, it seems) is the merlion. And yes, even though it is the stupidest thing you have ever heard, this is a being with the body of a mermaid and the head of a lion. Seriously, who comes up with this sort of stuff? If you want to see it, visit Singapore and go to the Merlion park opposite the Esplanade or see the even more gigantic sibling on Sentosa. Beautiful.

It has actually been a while that we last left Singapore… But all the ado about the new “Ms. Universe” got me back to thinking about this most weird of awards. In Singapore, there is actually a “most friendly immigration official” award that you, the fellow traveller entering Singapore, get to vote for. It is truly amazing — huge signs noting the award and your opportunity of casting a vote. And, more importantly, the huge smile on every official’s face as they greet you, stamp your passport in the most friendly way conceivable (whatever that means…) and even offer you candy! You have got to love a country that comes up with this sort of ideas.

PS: Surely, this title could also be won by a male immigration official. With gender equality at the workplace actually seeming to work in Singapore, though, it might just be won by a woman. Who even knows?

My thesis trimester — and with that my time in Singapore — is coming to an end. Just one more week and I will have to turn in my thesis, move out of this appartment (oh, how I am going to miss the pool!) and, well, move on. We will have some more time in the region, though, and are planning to travel quite a bit. We will make it to Malaysian Borneo, Kuala Lumpur and, maybe, Bali. We’ll see and I’ll be sure to keep posting.

After that it is back to Germany for almost a month. But we are going to be leaving again before October — more on that later. You can tell, I am not spending much time in Germany at the moment. Honestly, I like it that way — the rest of the world is just too interesting.

Unfortunately, the dream is over, Germany is out. It was still an amazing ride, even from this far away. I can still hardly believe how Germany got swept away with a wave of support for our team and, maybe more importantly, just how well they played. Out here in Asia, many people are closely following the games — amazing enough if you consider that none of the countries in the region even have a team playing. Much greater, though, was to see the German expat community gear up for the games, paint flags on their cheeks, wear Germany jerseys and go watch the game — in the middle of Singapore and Bangkok. We saw the quarter final against Argentina in Bangkok’s Old German Beerhouse and the semi-final against Italy in Singapore’s Paulaner Brauhaus. What a ride! Both places were packed with partying fans having a great time, supporting our team (we even managed to paint German flags on a couple of Britishs’ cheeks!) and, well, in the end seeing that it was still not enough.

Hah, but wait for 2010! Give Klinsmann another four years and you are going to see us win our next World Cup in South Africa!

English is one of the official languages of Singapore (the other three are Mandarin, Malay and Tamil). Practically everybody in Singapore speaks fluent English. The only problem: the average English-speaker won’t understand a word they’re saying. For one, everybody has a really strong Chinese-like accent. Additionally, there are some “interesting” local variations on grammar and vocab as well as Hokkien, Malay and Tamil words interspersed with English. For example, to ask for approval you say simply can?; to give your approval you answer can! For emphasis, you can use confirm as in he confirm very blur one. That, btw, translates to he’s not very smart. Believe me, it is hard to understand Singlish.

For this very reason, the Singapore government is scared of Singlish — they fear that Singapore as an investment destination will suffer because nobody understands the locals. This is quite funny — the government even runs a public “Speak good English!” advertising campaign. They also make sure that all official communication is spoken in perfect British English, for example the announcements on subways (including the mandatory please mind the gap) or the newscasters on tv. All this cannot, however, belie the fact that it is really hard to understand people around here — after three weeks in the country, I am still hardly used to it.

While you can certainly make fun of Indians for trying to evangelize vegetrianism, you cannot argue about their food which is excellent and all over Singapore.

We also had the pleasure (?) of trying out “Hainanese Steam Boat” (that’s from China, btw) — it’s basically a wok heated at your table filled with broth (it resembles fondue). Now, fondue is great so when some Chinese woman tried to lure us into this slightly seedy restaurant we let ourselves be dragged in. After all, lots of enthusiastic locals were sitting on plastic chairs devouring what seemed to be excellent food. Well, they just seem to have a different taste. We ordered a beef and a fish plate (sounds ok, doesn’t it?) and got some undefinable beef innards along with incredibly gross mussels, fishcake (it’s some kind of condensed fish that feels like foam when you chew it) and some very yummy liver. Oh, I forgot the stuff that felt like a sponge in your mouth and tasted like nothing (it was on the fish plate but God only knows what it was…).

It was such a great cultural experience. Whatever. As you might have guessed we left half the stuff untouched. All along people were looking at us as if we were from Mars — they didn’t seem to be very used to Westeners there. I was starting to feel bad about being such an intolerant Westener when some of the employees noticed the fact that we were not even touching their best stuff and started giggling unscrupulously (while standing right next to us!). In the end, we all had our laughs, the food wasn’t too expensive and it was quite the experience. Honestly, though, I am not going back.

If I had to summarize all the qualities of Singapore in one single word it would definitely be hot. If I had a second word I’d put humid. Don’t get me wrong, I love the place. But it’s still one giant metropolis-wide sauna. Around here you can really understand why god invented air-conditioning. Because, thank god!, everything is air-conditioned. Still, if you’re forced to wear anything else than flip-flops, shorts and a t-shirt, the ten-minute walk to the bus station will have you soaked with sweat.
