Read: The Sack of Rome

We’ve all had our good laughs about Italy — the corruption, the ineffectiveness, Berlusconi. Mostly, though, if you’re honest, we don’t really know much about what is really going on in that beautiful country. For all of us who want to learn more about it, Alexander Stille has written the perfect book. In his aptly named “The Sack of Rome: How a Beautiful European Country with a Fabled History and a Storied Culture Was Taken Over by a Man Named Silvio Berlusconi”, he chronicles the rise of Silvio Berlusconi. It is a fascinating tale of corruption, ties with organized crime, skirting the law and cutting any necessary corners in order to be successful. In the end, Berlusconi might have become the first person to successfully get into politics just to avoid jail time for himself and his closest associates.

If you want to know more, you should really read this book. It’s full of information and a good read — so you really cannot go very wrong.
