Big Guys With Shotguns
You know something is not right with the security situation in a country when every second restaurant / bar / shop has an armed guard standing outside its doors. The point where it gets really disconcerting, though, is when these arms are not simply pistols or something comparatively boring but a full-fledged shotgun. And this is the kind of guard they have outside an average chain eatery!
Probably worst of all, though, is the fact that these guys are not necessarily out to protect you. Quite on the contrary, we were warned that it is often actually the guards that perpetrate the worst crimes (such as the murder of an English tourist by her hotel guard a couple of years back).
But, hey, what the heck, we’ll just watch our back!
