Ms. Friendly Immigration Official
It has actually been a while that we last left Singapore… But all the ado about the new “Ms. Universe” got me back to thinking about this most weird of awards. In Singapore, there is actually a “most friendly immigration official” award that you, the fellow traveller entering Singapore, get to vote for. It is truly amazing — huge signs noting the award and your opportunity of casting a vote. And, more importantly, the huge smile on every official’s face as they greet you, stamp your passport in the most friendly way conceivable (whatever that means…) and even offer you candy! You have got to love a country that comes up with this sort of ideas.
PS: Surely, this title could also be won by a male immigration official. With gender equality at the workplace actually seeming to work in Singapore, though, it might just be won by a woman. Who even knows?
