World Cup Fever in Southeast Asia

Unfortunately, the dream is over, Germany is out. It was still an amazing ride, even from this far away. I can still hardly believe how Germany got swept away with a wave of support for our team and, maybe more importantly, just how well they played. Out here in Asia, many people are closely following the games — amazing enough if you consider that none of the countries in the region even have a team playing. Much greater, though, was to see the German expat community gear up for the games, paint flags on their cheeks, wear Germany jerseys and go watch the game — in the middle of Singapore and Bangkok. We saw the quarter final against Argentina in Bangkok’s Old German Beerhouse and the semi-final against Italy in Singapore’s Paulaner Brauhaus. What a ride! Both places were packed with partying fans having a great time, supporting our team (we even managed to paint German flags on a couple of Britishs’ cheeks!) and, well, in the end seeing that it was still not enough.

Hah, but wait for 2010! Give Klinsmann another four years and you are going to see us win our next World Cup in South Africa!
